Rye FSC: 80 Years of Service

The Rye Figure Skating Club was founded 80 years ago, in the spring of 1937 by Edward F. Page and incorporated by the state of New York on March 1, 1938 as a non-profit organization.

The Ice Casino at Playland - built in 1929 - is the home rink for the Club. Many national competitors grew up skating at Playland, including Olympic Gold Medalist Dorothy Hamill, a past and Honorary Member of the Rye FSC.  In 2014, the official name of the rink was changed to PlayLand Ice Casino.

Over the years, Rye FSC members have participated in all aspects and levels of skating, ranging from beginner to national competitor. The Club supports the many varied facets of figure skating, including dance, freestyle, pairs, moves in the field and synchronized skating.

Today, Rye FSC is well known for the excellence of its programs offered throughout the year.  Test sessions in ice dance, freestyle, pairs and moves in the field are scheduled approximately nine times a year.  Popular subscription ice sessions at PlayLand Ice Casino are offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings, September through June, with a discounted rate for Rye FSC members. On-ice clinics and off-ice seminars with renowned professionals are organized for the enjoyment and education of our members. Bi-annual competition simulations give skaters a chance to perform their routines on private ice before a judge, in a setting similar to a competition.  Send-off parties celebrate our members competing at the regional and national level, and private member-only events offer special perks to our skaters.

The Club also sponsors an annual USFS National Skating Month Exhibition showcasing Rye FSC members, open to the entire community. And every Spring, we honor our home club members who have participated in or volunteered for our programs at our Annual Awards & Member Recognition Ceremony, open to skaters and their families.

On March 11, 2017, Rye celebrated its 80th Anniversary with a grand Celebration on Ice at Playland Ice Casino. Skaters of all disciplines including theatre on ice, ice dance, freestyle, pairs, and synchronized skating were showcased during the one-hour event which attracted hundreds of spectators. Proceeds from the event went toward the Rye FSC Founders Fund and the Port Chester Carver Center. The first annual Shirley W. Bourquin Memorial Scholarships were also awarded. Shirley was a president of the Rye FSC for over 30 years.

Since its inception 80 years ago, the Rye Figure Skating Club has been dedicated to encouraging participation and achievement in figure skating within the community.  A board of volunteers actively maintains and supports the Club.  We are proud that our membership continues to grow year after year.
