First Annual Shirley W. Bourquin

Memorial Scholarships Awarded

The first annual Shirley W. Bourquin Memorial Scholarships were awarded at the Rye FSC 80th Anniversary Celebration on Ice to two home club members: Karin Nagaya and Kayla Pereira. The Scholarship was established to honor long-time Rye FSC president Bourquin's passion for encouraging the mastery of skating skills. The award recognizes Rye FSC home club members who demonstrate a similar passion for figure skating, and is to be used to defray skating-related or academic expenses. Karin is recognized for her determination to master several disciplines of skating, having passed her Senior Moves and Senior freestyle tests, as well as competing on a National level in Solo Dance. Kayla is recognized for her enthusiasm for skating in both freestyle and synchronized skating, as well as her steadfast volunteerism with Rye Figure Skating Club. Colette Nygren, Bourquin's daughter, presented the awards to Karin and Kayla. Donations to the scholarship fund may be sent to the Rye FSC Founders Fund, attn: Susan Keogh, 7 Reef Club, Hilton Head, SC 29926-1223.

A total of 55 participants skated 8 miles each (72 laps around the rink) and raised more than $40,000 for the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation.
